I was reading a blog post toady by Morty Lefkoe and the current state of Education. He talks about how we are in need of “A New Paradigm of Learning” and I strongly agree with him.
One part I particuarly love is when he says:
The amount of new knowledge produced every few years is greater than all the accumulated knowledge to date. The ability to succeed in the business world today (forget succeed—the ability even to get hired!) depends not so much on the quantity of information you know and how well you can follow orders but on your ability to think and act on your own. As Alvin Toffler put it, “The illiterate of the future are not those that cannot read or write, but those that cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
This is really important for us to remember as parents. the world is changing rapidly, and as a business owner and employer I know first hand how hard is to find and hire good candidates. Many of the young adults coming out of school are just taught how to memorize and regurgitate information – not HOW TO THINK or HOW TO PROBLEM SOLVE or HOW TO BE CREATIVE AND SOLUTION ORIENTED.
Our schools can not teach students the information they will need to be successful in the future because so much of the technology and jobs that will be around in 10 years are still unknown – making it really hard to teach only INFORMATION. Instead we must teach students HOW TO LEARN. We must focus on creating life long learners and problem solvers if we want our kids to flourish it this ever-changing new business world.
